Lymphatic Massage
At PSIW, we offer lymphatic massage to promote faster healing after a surgical procedure. We are committed to ensuring our patients experience a fast, comfortable recovery. The addition of lymphatic massage to your treatment plan can significantly speed the healing process.
What is Lymphatic Massage?
Lymphatic massage, or “manual lymphatic drainage (MLD),” is a specialized massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system. This system is responsible for removing excess fluid, toxins, and waste from the body. Unlike traditional massage, which focuses on deep muscle manipulation, lymphatic massage uses gentle, rhythmic movements to encourage the drainage of lymph fluid.
This technique helps reduce swelling, improve circulation, and enhance immune function, making it especially beneficial for post-surgical recovery. By promoting lymph flow, the body can more efficiently process and shed fluid buildup, bruising, and inflammation, leading to a faster, more comfortable healing experience.
Benefits of Lymphatic Massage
Lymphatic massage reduces swelling and fluid retention by stimulating lymphatic drainage, which helps the body remove excess fluid and minimize post-surgical inflammation. Enhancing circulation through this technique allows the body to heal more efficiently after procedures like liposuction, tummy tucks, and facelifts. The gentle movements also help minimize bruising and discomfort, promoting a faster return to daily activities.
Beyond surgical recovery, lymphatic massage supports the body’s detoxification process by removing toxins and metabolic waste. It can also improve skin health and appearance by reducing puffiness and promoting a smoother, more contoured look. Over time, regular lymphatic massage may contribute to improved skin tone and elasticity.
When to Begin Lymphatic Massage After Surgery
Lymphatic massage should be started on the following recovery timeline, based on the type of surgery:
- Liposuction – Recommended to start two weeks post-op
- Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) – Recommended to start four weeks post-op
- Facial surgery (facelift, eyelid surgery, or similar procedures) – Recommended to start ten days post-op
The timing may vary based on individual healing progress. A personalized post-surgical care plan is part of our process at PSIW, where we focus on patient safety, comfort, and healing.
What is Lymphatic Massage Like to Experience?
Lymphatic massage is a gentle, relaxing treatment designed to stimulate the lymphatic system without causing discomfort. Unlike deep tissue or Swedish massage, lymphatic massage uses light, rhythmic strokes, and precise, targeted movements to encourage the flow of lymph fluid toward the lymph nodes. The experience is soothing and often described as a wave-like sensation, with soft pressure applied in slow, deliberate motions.
During the session, patients rest comfortably on a treatment bed, and our lymphatic massage specialist works systematically, starting with key areas like the neck and collarbone, where major lymph nodes are located, and then moving into the treatment area. The goal is to assist in draining excess fluid, reducing swelling, and promoting circulation, all while keeping the experience relaxing and non-invasive.
Most patients notice an immediate sense of lightness and reduced puffiness, with continued swelling and positive changes in skin tone over the following days. Many find the experience calming and rejuvenating, making it a beneficial addition to their post-surgical recovery routine.
